Each new version of Mail app on the iPhone and iPad includes a variety of improvements and adjustments, but out of all the new features, some of the simplest changes are perhaps the most welcome. Case in point; a new and much faster way to easily mark all emails in Mail app as read.
Yes, you read that right, you can now almost instantly mark all email as read on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, without having to use any quirky tricks or workarounds to complete the task. Amazingly, this simple option took until modern iOS releases for users to get, but now the process is very direct and extremely quick. Here's how it works:
Mark All Email as Read on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Quickly in iOS Mail App
- Open Mail app, and go to an inbox where you have multiple emails that are set as unread
- Tap on the "Edit" button in the corner
- Now tap on the "Mark All" text (at the bottom on the iPhone)
- Choose "Mark as Read" to instantly mark all mail as read
For the best results when trying to mark all as read in a huge inbox, be sure to scroll down a ways so that more messages load. Stragglers that are not loaded within Mail app or within the scrollable region won't necessarily get marked as read, though part of that seems to depend on the individual email service that users have configured with Mail app.
The status effect is immediate, and all mail messages will lose the little blue dot next to them which is used to indicate an unread email. This really helps to quickly clear out a busy inbox, or just to cut down on the red notification badges that sit on the Mail icon if you don't like them lingering around on the home screen.
As you'll likely notice when tapping on "Mark All", above the mark all as read option is a "Flag" choice for those who use flagging. Also, this process can be done the other direction too, and used to mark all emails as 'unread' if that is desired as well. Between the three new bulk management options, it is now much easier than ever to manage enormous inboxes or just to declare inbox bankruptcy, mark everything as read (or spam if you hate your email senders), and start over from scratch again with inbox zero.
Sure this seems like such an incredibly simple feature, but it is actually a huge improvement from the behavior of marking bulk email as read in prior versions of iOS. Users who have not yet updated to iOS 7.0 will have to use the older methods of individual email selection, which really emphasizes how superior the new 'mark all as read' option is compared to the old trick that required individually marking selected mail messages as read by manually selecting multiple threads, to achieve a roundabout 'mark all' result. It's worth mentioning that old per-email message trick does continue to work in new versions of Mail app for iOS though, so if you need to just mark a smaller group of mail as read rather than everything, you can still do so by manually selecting them.
You'd be pretty normal if you came to your inbox each day to find dozens – if not hundreds – of unread emails. But that can sometimes mean you miss new messages when they come through.
To make things simpler, and to give you a fresh start, you can mark all your old emails as read so that you can start keeping on top of your new ones. And the good news is, Gmail's advanced search features make this process really easy. Here's how to mark all emails as read in Gmail.

Mark All Email As Read in Gmail Web
There are multiple ways to mark all emails as read in Gmail web. Google doesn't offer a direct option to mark all emails as read. Go through the steps below to mark all emails as read in Gmail web.
Step 1: Open the browser on your PC and navigate to Gmail.
Step 2: Sign in using your Google account credentials.
Step 3: From the default 'Inbox' menu, you will see your emails neatly getting divided into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums.
Step 4: You will find the Search Mail option at the top.
Step 5: Type label:inbox is:unread in the search field at the top of the page.
Step 6: Gmail will display the first 20 unread messages in your inbox.
Step 7: You can tap on the three-dot menu and select the 'Mark all as read' option. Alternatively, you can choose the 'Select All' option and tap on the down arrow icon and select 'Read' from the drop-down menu.
You can also tap the 'Select all' option in every section and mark all the emails as read. But I won't recommend using that option as you might miss some of the important emails in the process.
You should follow the steps above, have a glance over the unread emails, and if all seems fine, then you should use the mark all read option.
Is there any way in Gmail for Mobile (my iPhone) for me to read through an email message then mark it as "unread" so that when I get to my computer it shows up as not having been read? I tend to preview things on my phone and then forget to respond later when I'm in the office…
Sounds like you have a very similar workflow to me, actually: I often preview or read through email as it arrives in the Gmail for Mobile app on my iPhone, but want to return it to the incoming, unread list so that when I get on my main computer I can respond. Problem is, while Gmail's Web interface offers this feature off the main message menu, the mobile app doesn't have this feature on any of its menus.
Turns out that there are two ways you can mark an email message in Gmail as unread, but neither are at all obvious. Indeed, I stumbled into the first approach purely by accident, so you'll get to benefit from my experimentation within the app. I suppose that since it's Web-based the Gmail development team can measure which menu items are used the most and focus on those features for mobile, which suggests people are more likely to apply a label, print or delete a message than "mark as unread"?
MARK EMAIL MESSAGES AS UNREAD IN GMAIL FOR MOBILE
Once you're looking at an email message, whether in your inbox or a folder (label, folder, I use the words interchangeably) there are precious few options at the folder overview level:
My goal is to mark that email message from Andrew Miller as unread. A logical first step is to go into the message itself, which produces two different accessible menus, both off "•••" icons. The lower one, closer to the message body, produces this menu of options:
Seems like an entirely logical place to have a "Mark as Unread" but it's not there. Hmm… perhaps it's the higher "•••" button instead?
Another useful menu of options, but no joy. The "Mark as Unread" feature is lurking on this screen, but let's jump back one level to demonstrate.
Without any obvious clue, it turns out you can operate on multiple messages at once within Gmail for Mobile. Simply tap and hold on a message until a check mark appears:
Now tap on the envelope icon on the top and — ta daa! — it'll be marked as unread:
Neat, eh? Now if you look closely at the individual message view you'll notice that it too has that tiny envelope icon. In fact, you can mark an email message as unread while you're reading it too. So the feature is included, it's just not at all obvious.
But there's a cooler way to set things up to allow you to easily mark a message as unread too, since you have gestures on your smartphone, not just taps…
SET UP SWIPE TO MARK UNREAD IN GMAIL FOR MOBILE
Hopefully you already know that you can swipe right to delete a message and swipe left to archive an email message? Of course, if you use folders / labels as extensively as I do there's no value to archiving a message that's already archived, so why not reassign that gesture to allow you to mark a message as unread?
To do that, start by going to the main menu in Gmail for Mobile, accessible from the three horizontal lines menu on the top left of the screen. Swipe to the very bottom:
Choose "Settings" and you'll see the surprisingly few options in Gmail for Mobile:
As highlighted, choose "Mail swipe actions" and you can see your current setup:
The default is to trash an email by swiping right and archive by swiping left. But you can change these behaviors!
Tap on "Left swipe" near the bottom and you'll see all the possibilities:
Choose "Mark as read/unread" and when you go back to your email, you'll find that you can swipe right to trash a message as usual:
but now you can also swipe left to mark it as unread:
Pretty sweet, eh?

And hit enter. Note that this will give you all unread messages in the three main mailboxes I mentioned above. If you have unread messages that are automatically moved into a label, simply change the label from inbox to something else or just remove the entire label:inbox part and type just is:unread, which will give you all unread emails everywhere.
Now, click this dropdown arrow, then select "All"
This will select all the messages on the current page, but we want all messages on all pages. So also click Select all conversations that match this search.
Now, simply click this icon to mark all messages as "Read".
Now you'll be asked to confirm this bulk action.
Now it's time to bask in the sweet, sweet glow of having no unread message notifications. Enjoy!
